Digital Mammography

The Norwood Women's Imaging Center at Radiology Associates of Norwood, Inc. offers screening and diagnostic digital mammography. These important diagnostic tools often can find tumors 2 to 3 years before they can be felt. Such early detection not only can save lives, but also can provide women with the opportunity to receive many of the new breast saving treatments now available. Routine annual screening is now recommended in any woman aged 40 or over without symptoms, or sooner if a lump is detected in the breast.

A mammogram is a set of x-ray pictures of the breasts. The mammogram is performed on a dedicated machine that is designed to provide the best possible pictures with the least amount of radiation. To achieve this, the breasts are compressed briefly during the exam. The exam is performed by a technologist who has additional certification in digital mammography. After the images are obtained, they are interpreted by a board certified radiologist. Occasionally the radiologist requests additional views or a breast ultrasound, or possibly a breast MRI. This is done when more information is needed and most of the time these additional studies reveal that a finding is benign. It is important for the radiologist to compare your current mammogram with prior studies.
