Bone Densitometry
Osteoporosis is a common bone disorder which affects 28 million Americans,
80% of whom are women. The disease is characterized by the exaggerated
loss of bone mass and by poor bone quality. The skeleton becomes so weakened
that the slightest injury can cause a broken bone. Although it leads to
more than 1.5 million fractures each year, osteoporosis is a preventable
and treatable disease.
Bone densitometry is a test for osteoporosis.
It determines whether someone is at an increased risk for fracture
and can also monitor the response to osteoporosis treatment. At
Radiology Associates of Norwood, Inc., we offer dual energy
x-ray bone densitometry (DEXA scan). |

Prior to the bone densitometry test, measurements are taken of the spine,
femur or whole body. During the study, the patient lies on a flat table
and the scanner passes overhead. The testing procedure involves the use
of low energy radiation and a computer to assess bone mineral content.
Your measurments are then compared to a reference population based on
your age, weight, sex and ethnic background. This information is used
in conjunction with the bone mineral assessment by the physician in making
a diagnosis about your bone status and fracture risk. The procedure is
quick, painless and accurate.
